How to simplify a ratio

A ratio is in its simplest form when the parts have no common factor other than 1. Dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor gets you there in one step.

Last reviewed: 25 October 2026

The method

  1. Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the parts.
  2. Divide every part by the GCD.
  3. Check that the parts now share no common factor.

Examples

Ratios with decimals

Multiply every part by 10, 100 or 1,000 to remove decimals, then simplify. Example: 1.5:2.5 → 15:25 → 3:5.

Ratios with fractions

Multiply every part by the lowest common denominator. Example: ½:⅓ → multiply by 6 → 3:2.
